Plan a frame from the dimension you know

Internal math uses millimetres. Display rounding is separate, so switching between metric and fractional inches does not change the underlying geometry.

Cut list

Geometry basis: visible opening = rabbet opening − 2 × rabbet width. Finished outside = visible opening + 2 × moulding face width. For each member, long point = outside span and short point = visible-opening span.

Measurement definitions

Three lines that are often confused.

Visible opening

The front opening between the inside edges of the frame face. This planner uses that span as the miter short-point dimension.

Rabbet opening

The wider rear shoulder opening that receives glass, mat, artwork and backing. Fit clearance is added around the package.

Long point

The outside tip-to-tip length of each mitered member. It equals the matching short-point span plus two face widths.

FAQ

Cutting checks.

Why can terminology differ?

Framing shops and saw setups sometimes measure from the rabbet shoulder instead of the front short point. This planner labels both spans and documents the basis used for the cut list.

How is kerf counted?

The stock summary can include eight conservative kerfs—two miter cuts for each of four members. A production stop-block workflow may use stock differently, so review the allowance.

Does fractional rounding change the frame?

No. Internal millimetre values remain unchanged. Fraction precision controls only the displayed cut marks.

Can I save as PDF?

Use Print cut sheet and choose “Save as PDF” in the browser print dialog.
